How Citizen invented itself and its watches
When it comes to new technologies and new materials for watches, Citizen Watch has always been a bit further ahead than others in the course of its 100-year history. Progress at Citizen, as one of the largest watchmakers, is driven by the belief that everything can be improved and that the right time to do this is now. With its brand statement "Better starts now", Citizen has set an example for its watches and is today rightly one of the largest watch manufacturers in the world.
It was a completely different story in 1918, when Citizen laid the foundation for the internal Citizen Watch Group with its predecessor company, Shōkōsha Tokei Kenkyūsho, in Tokyo. At the time, most of the watches came from overseas. But the founding spirit prompted Citizen to set up a watchmaking school and train its employees in the art of watchmaking. Six years later, the time had come: The first self-produced Citizen watch was released, at that time still made on Swiss machines.
Citizen's wristwatches also proved to be a small sensation in terms of price. In contrast to the imported luxury watches, the new watch models were affordable for regular citizens. And so the mayor of Tokyo first brought into play the name that both the company and the watches bear today: Citizen.
In the meantime, all manufacturing processes - from development to final assembly - of the watches are the responsibility of Citizen itself. Under the Miyota brand, the Japanese Citizen have long since dedicated themselves to the production of movements that other manufacturers also use in their timepieces.
From Eco-Drive to Promaster to Citizen wall clocks: Timepieces for every situation
Highest precision and a pleasant wearing experience - these are the hallmarks of Citizen watches. And the Japanese are always at the forefront when it comes to cutting-edge technologies.
Eco-Drive: for quartz and radio-controlled Citizen watches
With the Citizen Eco-Drive, the watchmakers developed a drive that allows quartz watches to function solely on the basis of solar power - even in dim light, making the battery superfluous. A Citizen watch with Eco-Drive will run for months, even in the dark! Today, the Japanese watchmakers also use the innovative Eco-Drive technology in their Citizen radio-controlled watches, which, in addition to being solar-powered, have a signal that shows the exact time at all times. Thus, in addition to the battery, the manual time change is no longer necessary.
Citizen Satellite Wave: Eco-Drive with GPS
The models in Citizen's Satellite Wave series - the GPS watches from Citizen that receive the time signal within three seconds anywhere in the world - work just as precisely.
Citizen Super Titanium: Watches made of titanium
With watch cases made of titanium, Citizen managed the balancing act between pleasant wearing comfort and eternal beauty. The material, which became Super Titanium through Citizen's own surface hardening, is five times harder but 40 percent lighter than stainless steel and virtually caresses the wrist. At the same time, the watch retains its beautiful appearance for as long as possible.
Citizen Promaster: Diving Watches
The Japanese watch manufacturer also proves its pioneering role in diving watches, where Citizen is one of the market leaders today. First and foremost is Citizen's Promaster collection, which offers the right functionalities for every challenge. In 1985, the manufacturer presented the first diving watch with an integrated depth gauge.
Citizen Elegance: from sporty men's watches to elegant ladies' watches
The design of Citizen's men's and women's watches captivates with a sporty vein. The look makes the wristwatches and chronographs excellent everyday companions. The men's watches from the Citizen sports line can be classified here. Citizen ladies' watches that stand out with their feminine elegance are offered by the Citizen Elegance series.
